WITH a name such as the Explosion, your band is not likely to be known for singing placid ballads.

Yet the Boston five-piece rock collective has exhausted the past three years playing some of the world's most infamous rock venues with bands such as Good Charlotte, New Found Glory, Strung Out and Rocket From the Crypt. After their first Australian release, the debut album Black Tape, was issued this year, the band received a strong enough response from new Australian fans to justify their initial tour here.

The Explosion initially spent two years on the road in the US as an indie band. The quintet was signed a couple of years ago by EMI and put out Black Tape last October. It was released here in March.

The first show to take a punt on the band was Stu Harvey's Wednesday night Triple J program Short, Fast, Loud. Although the band has not exactly broken any sales records, they are still regularly requested on alternative radio.

The band comprises bassist Damian Genuardi, guitarists Dave Prentice-Walsh and Sam Cave, drummer Andrew Black and vocalist Matt Hock. Tonight's show is over-18 only and fully licensed while tomorrow afternoon's will be drug, alcohol and over-18 free. It should be a fast, furious and noisy display. -- ANDREW MURFETT
